Presented by the Sunflower Troupe, Silent Sky is a beautifully written story of astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, whose brilliant achievements in the early 1900s changed the way we understand the universe. Miss Leavitt, working on her own while employed at the Harvard Observatory, accomplished this during a time when women were not allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea.
The play explores the challenges women faced in science during that era, the importance of women’s contributions to astronomy, and personal themes like family ties and the possibility of love.
“In our troubled days it is good to have something outside our planet, something fine and distant for comfort.”
— Annie Jump Cannon
